Labor share, foreign demand and superstar exporters

چکیده
This paper proposes a new determinant of labor share changes. Using micro-data on the universe French manufacturing exporters over 1995–2007, I show that measure export demand growth exogenous to firm-level outcomes drives down through two effects. First, foreign shocks allow low-labor share, highly internationalized “superstar” grow disproportionately more. Second, decreases and this effect is stronger for larger exporters. Both effects generate sizable decline, regardless aggregate dynamics. A simple heterogeneous-firm model with endogenous markups rationalizes my empirical results. Overall, these findings provide direct causal evidence “winner take most” phenomenon induced by trade globalization emphasize role increased competition international markets

The Fall of the Labor Share and the Rise of Superstar Firms⇤
The fall of labor’s share of GDP in the United States and many other countries in recent decades is well documented but its causes remain uncertain. Existing empirical assessments of trends in labor’s share typically have relied on industry or macro data, obscuring heterogeneity among firms. In this paper, we analyze micro panel data from the U.S. Economic Census since 1982 and international so...
متن کاملLabor Share and Technology Dynamics
In this paper we develop a theory on the joint dynamics of labor share and technology (measured as a Solow residual) at the business cycle frequency. Our main motivating fact is the overshooting property of the labor share: After a positive technology shock, the share of output that corresponds to labor falls temporarily but it quickly rises, at a higher level (in absolute terms) than the initi...
متن کاملLocal Labor Demand and Child Labor
This paper uses micro data from the Brazilian PNAD between 1981 and 2002 to ascertain the role of local labor demand play in shaping work and schooling decisions of children aged 10-15. Using male adult employment by state and year as a proxy for labor demand, we find evidence that contrary to the widespread view that child labor is procyclical among young children (ages 1012) employment (schoo...
متن کاملForeign Labor Developments
The mid-1970's marked a turning point in Italy's industrial relations system . At that time, the system appeared to be a case of pluralism, recognized and supported by the statute of workers' rights (Act 300/1970). The main aspects and institutions of industrial relations remained outside the legal regulation . In fact, trade unions and employers' associations exercised joint power. Trade union...
متن کاملDo Foreign Contacts Enable Firms to Become Exporters?
The pattern of trade between nations is well understood, but much less is known about firm level determinants to export: why do some firms start to export while others continue to produce for the domestic market? One reason for different firm strategies could be that the fixed costs for export differs between firms. This paper examines if foreign contacts decrease export-costs and thereby have ...
